Our customer, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, had failed to meet the 62 day cancer standard since 2014. A recovery action plan identified the need for training and we were commissioned to develop and provide this. The team’s role was to build capability within the trust to manage cancer waits more effectively.

The CSU team developed and led a tailored training package to the trust. This included specific learning outcomes, exercises to test staff’s learning and information on how to access expertise and additional support if needed. This was delivered to 20 multidisciplinary team coordinators and managers.

After this training, we had:

  • Addressed the inconsistencies in application of guidance
  • Achieved and maintained the 31 day radiotherapy standard at 100 per cent.
  • 62 day standard for cancer was met in March 2017, for the first time since 2015
  • Received very positive feedback

We have also delivered cancer waiting time training, though our specialist cancer commissioning team, across North Central London and north west London. This aimed to improve patient experience and reduce the resources used on remedial actions, as well as boosting commissioners’ capability; consequently, it resulted in fewer queries from commissioners.
