Good Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practice is at the heart of patient safety, patient experience and clinical effectiveness. The NHS spends more than £1 billion a year on healthcare associated infections.

NHS England (London) wanted assurance that their primary care providers are compliant with current IPC practice. They commissioned us to audit all GP and dental premises across all 33 London boroughs.

Our team offered an audit service comprising:

  • Pre-audit liaison with practices, documentation and scheduling
  • Audit reports findings and recommendations returned to the customer
  • Support for practices to develop their action plans, then further monitoring as required

The team also provided input into new build and refurbishment projects, working closely with commissioners to provide oversight and receive assurance on IPC across a large geographical area.

We audited 416 GP and dental practices across the 33 boroughs

We undertook 416 planned and reactive audits of GP and dental practices in 2015/16. Most practices scored 90% or higher in their IPC audits. For practices with less a score less than 90%, recommendations were made and assistance given with the development of action plans. After action plans were implemented, most practices scored more than 95%.

When surveyed, 95% of respondents strongly agreed or agreed with the statement “I would recommend this team to colleagues requiring infection prevention and control audit”.

Yvonne Davies, Primary Care Commissioner, NHS England:

“NEL provides a quality infection control service for NHSE ensuring GP and dental practices meet the necessary infection control standards. They provide an efficient, robust service and work hard under sometimes difficult circumstances. Where a practice requires additional support, they have been quick to respond. Altogether an excellent service. Thank you!”
